What is A Doula? | Kansas City Doula Explains

Birth doulas hold such special, almost sacred, spaces in the birth world. I’m not a midwife or the nurse. I don’t do any charting, or measure any process of your labor. A doula is quite simply there for support, to hold space for you while you are working to bring your baby into this world, to give helpful tips and tricks to dad while he also supports you.

Bringing knowledge and experience into the room with you to help create a team with both you and your partner with suggestions for emotional, physical, and educational support.

I believe mothers can birth their babies with little or no intervention. Trusting their bodies is essential and I want to help you discover that. After all, your body was made for this.

What are the benefits of hiring a doula?

Research has shown that when birthing mothers have continuous support from a doula during their birth experience:

* 39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean birth

*15% increase of vaginal birth

*10% decrease in use of medications for pain relief

*Shorter labors

*38% decrease in baby’s risk of low Apgar score at 5 minutes

*31% decrease in risk of being dissatisfied with birth experience

What is included in doula services?

Usually something along these lines are more or less included in a doula services. This is what I personally offer my doula clients:

  • In-person consultation (30-60 minutes)
  • 1-2 prenatal appointments at your home
  • Support throughout pregnancy via email, text, or phone call
  • On-call 24/7 from 38 weeks until delivery
  • Emotional, mental, and physical support for you and your birth partner from active labor until 1-2 hours postpartum
  • 1 postpartum check-in at your home (1 hour, optional)

Sounds great! But what does a doula cost??

So again, this is something that can average per doula and what area you are in. Here in Kansas City I personally charge $1500 for each doula client but have seen cost range anywhere from $1000-2000. Experience and length in the birth world can determine the price point.
